SUMMER SAMPLER CAL – Part 5

We’re now ready for the 5th square in this beautiful blanket we are making. This square is especially adaptive to be a dishcloth/washcloth because of the close weave. That just means you should make several so you can have the one for the blanket and others for dishcloths. They make great quick gifts for friends too.

Counterpane Square

So let’s start with the supplies you will need for this square:

MATERIALS NEEDED:

Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn in Any color – Approx 50 yds

6mm hook

Scissors

Tapestry Needle

As you can see, there’s a minimal amount of yarn needed for this square, so…

Stitches used and abbreviations:

Ch – chain stitch

St – stitch

Sk – skip stitch

Sp – space

Sc – single crochet

Esc – extended single crochet

Inv join – invisible join

FO – Fasten off

The Extended Single Crochet stitch may be new to some of you so I am providing instructions here on how to make it:

Extended Single Crochet – Insert hook in st or ch, yarn over, pull through st loop, yarn over, pull through one loop, yarn over, pull through two loops.

I would spend some time getting used to this stitch as it’s used throughout this square.

ROWS:

  1. Ch34, esc in 2nd ch from hook, *ch1, sk 1 st, esc*, repeat to end. (33)
  2. Ch1, *esc in the open sp, sk the esc from the previous row* repeat to last st, ch1, esc in last st.
  3. Repeat Row 2 until you have a total of 19 rows.
  4. Ch1, turn, hdc in ea row down the side, across the bottom, up the side and across the top.  3 hdc in ea corner.  Inv join to fo and weave in ends.
  5. We will be blocking all of these squares. So if you like to work ahead, you can certainly block your squares as you go.

If you have just started this CAL and would like to make the previous squares pictured above, just scroll down on this blog and you will find all the previous squares. SUMMER SAMPLER CAL – PART 4

BASKETWEAVE SQUARE

It’s now time for Part 4 of the Summer Sampler Crochet-A-Long. I hope you have enjoyed your makes so far. As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

The Basketweave stitch looks complicated but is actually quite simple. It gives great texture and completely different look from all other stitches.

Let’s get started with the basics:

MATERIALS NEEDED:

Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn in Any color – Approx 74 yds

6mm hook

Scissors

Tapestry Needle

I used Cotton yarn for my squares so they can be used as dishcloths/washcloths. This is my preference. If you are only making the blanket, you can use any yarn you wish. I also have been using only one color but, of course, you can use one color or many colors.

Stitches used and abbreviations:

Ch – chain stitch

St – stitch

Dc – double crochet

Fpdc – front post double crochet See Fig 1

Fpdc3 – fpdc in the next 3 sts

Bpdc – back post double crochet See Figs 2-4

Inv join – invisible join

FO – Fasten off

Gauge – 4 sts x 2 rows = 1”

Front post double crochet placement
Fig 1 – Front Post Double Crochet Placement

As you can see, you will insert your hook around the post beneath the actual stitch to make this stitch. You will then make the double crochet as usual.

BPDC - Fig 2
Fig 3 – Back Post Double Crochet Placement (the post is behind the hook here)

SUMMER SAMPLER CAL – PART 2

HALF DOUBLE CROCHET BETWEEN THE POST

Today will be the 2nd square in the Summer Sampler Crochet-a-Long. We will be doing the Half Double Crochet between the Post stitch. This is much easier than it sounds.

HDC between post square

So let’s get started…

MATERIALS NEEDED:

Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn in Any color – Approx 68 yds

6mm hook

Scissors

Tapestry Needle

Stitches used and abbreviations:

Ch – chain stitch

St – stitch

Hdc – half double crochet

Inv join – invisible join

FO – Fasten off

Gauge – 4 sts x 3 rows = 1”

I have you use cotton or a cotton blend yarn only because these squares can be made for dishcloths or washcloths. If you are planning on making this into a beautiful blanket, you can use any worsted weight yarn you like.

ROWS:

  1. Ch28, hdc in the 3rd ch from the hook and down. (25)
  2. Ch2, hdc under the 3rd loop for ea st, hdc in the sp between the beginning ch and the 1st hdc. (25)

Beginning of Row 2

Row 2
ROW 2
  1. Repeat Row 2 for 19 rows.
  2. Ch2, turn and hdc in ea row down the side, across the bottom, up the other side and across the top making 3 hdc at ea corner.  On the bottom and top rows, make your hdc between the posts.  Use invisible join to fasten off.

Each of your squares should measure approximately 8 inches. This will be important when we join them together. If you need to increase your square to get the correct measurements, simply add more rows. If you need to make your square smaller to get the correct measurements, simply decrease the number of rows.

Inv Join 2
Invisible Join – Fig 2
Inv Join 3
Invisible Join – Fig 3
Inv Join 4

Inv Join 5
Invisible Join – Fig 5

It is very important to finish your square by doing the final row as it will be needed to join the squares. Even if you choose to use each square as a dishcloth/washcloth, the final row helps to finish it off and help it keep it’s shape.

I hope you enjoy this CAL as much as Jamie and I have enjoyed designing it for you. Make sure to subscribe and follow my page so you don’t miss the next square.

Crochet On and Many Blessings to you!!!
