RACER TURTLE KEYCHAIN

I’ve been thinking about making something small that can be made in just a few hours. I came up with Racer. So many color options, great for stash busting and can be made into a keychain, magnet or just to have around.

Racer turtle keychain

Racer measures 3″ long so it’s also a perfect toy for kids to carry around.

MATERIAL NEEDED:

Sport or DK Weight Yarn in Shell Color – Approx 5 yds 

Sport or DK Weight Yarn in Green – Approx 10 yds

Sport or DK Weight Yarn in Black – Small amt

3.5mm hooks

2 – 6mm safety eyes

Scissors

Stitch Markers

Tapestry Needle

Polyfil or scrap yarn

Stitches used and abbreviations:

Ch – chain stitch

MR – magic ring

Inc – increase = 2 sc in the same st

St – stitch

Sc – single crochet

Dec – decrease = single crochet 2 together

Sl st – slip stitch

Sc2 = single crochet in the next 2 stitches

FO – Fasten off

Gauge:  6 sc x 6 rows = 1”

This pattern is a beginner pattern.

OUTER SHELL

Using Shell Color 

  1. MR, ch1, sc6 in the ring, DO NOT JOIN. (6)
  2. Inc in ea st. (12)
  3. *Sc, inc* x 6. (18)
  4. Sc, inc, *2sc, inc* x 5, sc. (24)
  5. *3sc, inc* x 6. (30)
  6. 2sc, inc, *4sc, inc* x 5, 2sc. (36)
  7. Sl st in 1st st, fo.

UNDER SHELL & HEAD

Using Green Yarn

  1. MR, ch1, sc6 in the ring, DO NOT JOIN. (6)
  2. Inc in ea st. (12)
  3. *Sc, inc* x 6. (18)
  4. Sc, inc, *2sc, inc* x 5, sc. (24)
  5. *3sc, inc* x 6. (30)
  6. 2sc, inc, *4sc, inc* x 5, 2sc. (36)
  7. Sl st in 1st st.
  8. Put outer shell against under shell with wrong sides together, sc through both shells x 33. Stuff lightly.
  9. 3sc in under shell only, 3sc in outer shell, DO NOT JOIN. (6) This makes the neck of the turtle
  10. Inc in ea st. (12)
  11. Sc in ea st. (12)
  12. Sc in ea st. (12)
  13. Sc in ea st. (12) Stuff head lightly.
  14. Dec x 6. (6)
  15. FO and use the tail to sew in and out of the remaining 6 sts to close, weave in end.  Glue safety eyes with 1 st between them to head.  I used hot glue.

FLIPPERS – Make 2

Using Green Yarn

  1. MR, ch1, sc6 in the ring, DO NOT JOIN. (6)
  2. Inc in ea st. (12)
  3. *Sc, inc* x 6. (18)
  4. Fold in half with right side out, sl st through both sides to close.
  5. Fo leaving long tail to sew to bottom of turtle.  Sew to bottom of turtle with the curved edge towards the tail end, 3 sts from the head.

BACK LEGS – Make 2

Using Green Yarn

  1.  MR, ch1, sc6 in the ring, DO NOT JOIN. (6)
  2. Sc in ea st. (6)
  3. Sc in ea st. (6)
  4. Use beginning tail as stuffing in the leg, sew to bottom of the turtle 13 sts from the head.

TAIL

Using Green Yarn

  1. Have a long tail at the front, ch5, fo leaving long tail for sewing.  Sew the tail on the bottom of the turtle in the center opposite the head.  Make a loop by sewing ea end in separately.  This is where you can attach the keychain spring clip or glue a magnet to the back.

Enjoy your keychain and make them in all different colors.  Great for kids backpacks, on your luggage to make it easy to find at the airport, on your keychain or whatever you need to brighten your day!
